Industrial Maintenance Engineer
Industrial Maintenance Engineer, Mechanical Systems - Norfolk, VA - Enjoy a rewarding and challenging position with a nonprofit organization that has been helping educate, train, and provide employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities since 1955. We are currently seeking applicants for a full-time Industrial Maintenance Engineer, Mechanical Systems to support the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical and industrial equipment within our facilities. This is a hands-on position for an individual with strong mechanical aptitude and experience maintaining complex industrial systems. The ideal candidate may come from industrial manufacturing, utilities, shipboard engineering, facilities maintenance, power generation, hospital plant operations, or military engineering environments. Candidates with military engineering experience, including experience comparable to a U.S. Navy Machinist's Mate, are strongly encouraged to apply.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties and responsibilities represent the essential functions of this job that an individual must be able to perform with or without a reasonable accommodation:
- Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on industrial mechanical equipment and facility systems.
- Troubleshoot mechanical equipment failures and determine root causes rather than relying solely on component replacement.
- Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair industrial equipment, including:
- Pumps, Motors, Bearings, Gearboxes, Valves, Piping systems, Hydraulic systems, Pneumatic systems, Steam systems, Compressed air systems, Conveyors, Fans and blowers, Heat exchangers, Boilers and associated equipment, Water and process systems Industrial production equipment
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, steam, and basic electrical or electromechanical equipment problems.
- Perform equipment alignments, adjustments, inspections, lubrication, component replacement, and mechanical repairs.
- Read and interpret equipment manuals, technical drawings, schematics, piping diagrams, and manufacturer specifications.
- Establish and maintain preventive maintenance schedules for critical equipment.
- Conduct routine equipment inspections to identify developing problems before equipment failure occurs.
- Maintain accurate maintenance histories and equipment records in electronic databases; knowledge of MaintainX is preferred.
- Document equipment failures, repairs, parts replaced, contractors used, and corrective actions.
- Assist with development and maintenance of an equipment inventory and critical spare-parts inventory.
- Identify recurring equipment failures and recommend permanent corrective actions.
- Coordinate repairs requiring specialized outside contractors or equipment manufacturers.
- Review contractor repairs to ensure work was completed properly before equipment is returned to service.
- Assist management in evaluating repair versus replacement decisions for major equipment.
- Support equipment installation, commissioning, modification, and replacement projects.
- Assist with troubleshooting production interruptions and restoring equipment to service safely and efficiently.
- Identify equipment reliability risks and communicate concerns to management before they result in significant operational disruptions.
- Assist with developing standard operating procedures, maintenance procedures, inspection checklists, and equipment-specific preventive maintenance requirements.
- Ensure equipment maintenance complies with manufacturer recommendations and applicable safety requirements.
- Follow OSHA requirements and organizational safety policies, including proper Lockout/Tagout procedures when servicing equipment.
- Participate in safety inspections and assist in identifying mechanical or equipment-related hazards.
- Maintain accountability for assigned tools, equipment, repair parts, and maintenance materials.
- Provide technical guidance and assistance to maintenance personnel and operations staff when necessary.
- Respond to emergency equipment failures and assist with restoring critical operations.
- Perform other mechanical maintenance, facilities, and equipment reliability duties as assigned.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, & EXPERIENCE:
The following qualifications represent the training, education, certifications, licenses, and/or work experience required to perform the essential duties and responsibilities successfully:
- Significant hands-on experience maintaining industrial mechanical equipment.
- Experience in industrial maintenance, engineering, central plant operations, or similar environments.
- Strong troubleshooting ability involving complex mechanical systems.
- Experience with pumps, motors, bearings, valves, piping, hydraulics, pneumatics, steam, compressed air, and industrial machinery.
- Familiarity with boilers and steam distribution systems is highly desirable.
- Experience working with industrial electrical equipment, motor controls, sensors, or electromechanical systems is beneficial.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings, technical manuals, schematics, and equipment documentation.
- Experience developing or following preventive maintenance programs.
- Ability to diagnose equipment problems independently and develop practical repair solutions.
- Experience working with computerized maintenance management systems or electronic maintenance records is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Physical demands: Performing the duties of this job requires near visual acuity, the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds, and gross manipulation. Additionally, the employee:
- Ability to work in an industrial environment.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, and work around industrial equipment and carry a 50 lbs. load.
- Ability to safely use ladders and access equipment areas.
- Ability to lift and move tools, parts, and equipment consistent with the requirements of the position.
- Ability to work in areas that may be hot, noisy, wet, or exposed to normal industrial operating conditions.
Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be primarily indoors in industrial settings and may be exposed to dust/lint, dirt, mold, and various chemical solvents. Outside work may require climbing on a building roof. Must be able to withstand extreme fluctuations of temperature and noise level.

Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
This position will require working nights or weekends for emergency repairs on equipment and to ensure continuity of operations.
