Mechanical Design Engineer - Central Design – Birmingham

Summary of Position Duties:

  • We are looking for experienced mechanical design engineers for the Birmingham Office for Southern Nuclear.
  • Design engineer duties include preparation and coordination of design development, calculation development and update, drawing changes, and preparing project cost estimates and schedules for plant modifications and retrofits.
  • This position requires field walk downs in industrial environments for as-built verification and design constructability.
  • Additional duties include providing design oversight for products developed by external Architect / Engineering firms, interfacing with project managers, implementation engineers, and other plant department personnel to ensure all design requirements are met.
  • Design Engineers may have opportunities to manage special projects and perform key refueling outage roles, including design implementation oversight, problem solving and issue resolution, and conducting post modification testing.
  • Engineering assignments typically include on-call duty engineer and emergency plan response requirements. Emergency Plan functions require a 90-minute report time to the plant site following notification.
  • Create Design Change Packages and supporting documentation.
  • Develop and maintain electrical calculations including voltage drop, breaker coordination, and load study analysis calculations.
  • Ensure design drawings are updated after completion of a design modification.
  • Present design changes at various meetings.
  • Coordinate and write test procedures, as needed.
  • Manage design scope, schedule, and budget to meet site objectives.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders and vendors associated with modifications.
  • Provide input for/attend post-project evaluation/lessons learned meetings.
  • Other duties as required.

Educational Requirements

  • BS in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution or PE license required – required for Engineering job family
  • Nuclear design modifications experience is preferred.
  • Construction planning, scheduling and implementation experience preferred.
  • Project management/oversight experience preferred.

Technical Requirements

  • Working knowledge of design processes and configuration is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the applicable discipline codes and standards is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of PWR systems, structures and components is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of nuclear power plant design and systems is preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft office products, specifically WORD, EXCEL and POWERPOINT.
  • Experience with development and maintenance of design related calculations is desired.

Other requirements:

The successful candidate must meet background screening and NRC Fitness for Duty requirements. Selected candidate must be willing to relocate within one hour of the SNC Emergency Operations Facility for emergency response availability.

Please note: This position may require the successful completion of the SNC Initial Engineering Training as a condition of continued employment. The training is several weeks long and is a rigorous period that may require studying after work hours.
