Job Summary and Qualifications
Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, Coordinators (shift dependent), the Laboratory Assistant has primary responsibility for the efficient organization and effectiveness of the Laboratory Desk, Reception Area, and specimen procurement. The employee will provide services addressing age-related techniques in specimen obtainment and care focusing on neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations. This involves greeting outpatients, answering the telephone, scheduling appointments, answering questions regarding the test procedures and time elements, filing, comparing requests on the printer output with orders on the terminal display, interfacing between other hospitals, hospital departments, physicians, medical offices and reference laboratories, obtaining blood specimens, providing quality service, and performing general laboratory duties. This is the public relations for the Laboratory; therefore, she/he should be neat in appearance and pleasant in personality.What qualifications you will need:
- Prefer Phlebotomy Certification
- Experience in a hospital laboratory is desired, but not necessary.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- The Laboratory Assistant shall integrate current scientific knowledge with technical competency, which relates to the Laboratory Department.
- The Laboratory Assistant shall participate in establishing and following written policies and procedures for ordering, inventory allowances, monitoring inventory supply, maintenance program, and performing maintenance programs.
- She/he demonstrates knowledge, responsibility and participates in the implementation of all aspects of the Safety/Chemical Hygiene Plan, Infectious/Exposure control Plan, Electrical Safety, Disaster Plan, Code Blue Plan, Fire Plan, Computer Systems, Performance Improvement Activities, and the Compliance Program.
- The Phlebotomist will be knowledgeable/competent in regards to age-related blood obtainment techniques, amounts of blood obtained, laboratory values, age-related abuse, and age-related communications; focusing on neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations.
- Perform Front Desk tasks, phlebotomy collection and customer service relationships.
- The Laboratory Assistant shall maintain an atmosphere of professionalism.
- Communicates technical and general information to peers, medical personnel and customers in a positive, courteous and professional manner.
- Promotes a positive image in daily and professional activities.
- Displays consideration to all customers and peers.
