Teamsters Local 142 Training & Apprenticeship Center – Merrillville, IN The Teamsters Local 142 Training & Apprenticeship Center proudly partners with the national Helmets to Hardhats (H2H) program to provide transitioning service members, veterans, National Guard, and Reservists with a direct pathway into rewarding union careers. Our focus is the Construction Driver Apprenticeship Program, where veterans can earn while they learn, developing the skills needed to drive a wide variety of trucks and support construction projects across Northwest Indiana. This program is designed for individuals who want a hands-on, skilled trade career in the transportation and construction industry. Participants will gain professional training, on-the-job experience, and the credentials required for long-term success — all while working as a valued member of the Teamsters. Key Responsibilities *Engage in structured classroom and field training under the supervision of experienced instructors. *Learn safe driving techniques and federal/state transportation regulations. *Master cargo securement and equipment operation protocols. *Participate in ongoing evaluations to ensure skill development and readiness. *Represent Teamsters Local 142 and Helmets to Hardhats with professionalism and dedication. Primary Responsibilities

  • Complete required classroom training on CDL preparation, HazMat, OSHA, and safety regulations.
  • Operate commercial vehicles under instructor supervision to gain driving proficiency.
  • Perform equipment inspections, preventive maintenance checks, and proper cargo securement.
  • Learn to read maps, follow GPS/routing systems, and understand DOT Hours of Service.
  • Practice safe driving skills in a variety of jobsite conditions (day/night, urban/rural).
  • Work cooperatively with journey-level Teamsters, contractors, and other trades on construction sites.
  • Adhere to all union, employer, and federal/state safety requirements. 

Minimum Application Requirements

  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (past 5 years).
  • Able to obtain a CDL per Federal and Indiana law.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Physically capable of performing essential job functions (lifting, climbing, securing loads).
  • Selected applicants must be able to obtain a DOT medical certificate and pass DOT pre-employment drug/alcohol testing and physical.

  • Proof of age (valid driver’s license and original birth certificate)
  • Social Security card or U.S. Work Authorization Document
  • Copy of high school diploma or GED certificate
  • Military DD-214 (if applicable)
  • Official driving record (must be within 7 days of application date – available via BMV website or local branch office)
  • 3 letters of recommendation (excluding immediate family) 

Application Fee

  • $25.00 non-refundable (money order only) payable to Teamsters Union Local 142 Training & Apprenticeship
  • Due at the time of application drop-off
