Job Description


The work of the Mechanical System Insulator includes the insulation of both industrial and commercial mechanical systems (i.e., piping, boilers, duct work, storage tanks, and equipment) for the purpose of energy savings, burn protection and to control system heat transfer and condensation. Industrial applies to power plants, chemical process plants, refineries, natural gas Industry, steel mills, etc. Commercial applies to schools, hospitals, offices, etc. The Mechanical System Insulator may also be state licensed for asbestos abatement. 


The Insulator works with many types of insulating materials, mastics, vapor barriers and protective jacketing. Work is done using a wide variety of hand and power tools

Job Description:

The work of the insulator and asbestos worker covers industrial, commercial and cryogenics.

Industrial: includes all types of industries, such as chemical process, petrochemical, metal and other process industries, liquid organic heating systems, steam condensing cycles, high-temperature hot water systems, etc.

Commercial: includes buildings, building services, and refrigerated spaces.

Cryogenics: the field of low-temperature service, such as required by the liquefied gases, generally below minus 100F.

(EPA) Approved Asbestos Abatement: Certified insulators remove asbestos from schools, hospitals, power plants, chemical, and industrial facilities.

Materials: Insulators work with an abundance of materials, such as fiberglass, cork, calcium-silicate, foam glass, expanded silicate and spray insulation. These materials insulate hot and cold piping, refrigerant lines, ductwork, boilers, tanks, large power plants, brine lines, and cooler rooms.

Special Tools: The insulator works from blueprints and uses tools such as welding machines, knives, scissors, trowels, measuring, and leveling tools.


Requirements

This is construction work, and the work is outside as well as inside. Weather can be a factor. The work can be performed at heights, working on ladders and scaffolds, or can perform in confined spaces. Workers deal with various types of insulating materials, mastics, and vapor barriers. Work is done from blueprints, using a wide variety of power tools from cutting, leveling and fastening supplies.

The Joint Apprenticeship Committee of the Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers Local #2 is now accepting applications for its 2026 apprenticeship selection process. Applications are available at the AWL #2 Apprentice Training Center in Aliquippa on Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon to 4:30 p.m., or by appointment. 

General Qualifications:
  • 18 years of age
  • High School Graduate diploma or GED
  • Physically fit to perform the work of the trade
  • Reside within the geographic jurisdiction of Insulators Local #2 for at least one year before the application
  • Submit a non-refundable processing and testing fee

  • Admission Requirements of the Joint Apprenticeship Committee
  • Qualify on a written test established by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee
  • 2 1/2 points are added for each successive year that an applicant retakes the test up to a max of ten pts.

  • Agree to abide by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee Standards and Rules
  • Pass a drug test
  • Agree to attend classroom instruction
