Through a partnership between the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 231 and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), the JATC provides industry-leading education and training for electrical apprentices and journeymen.

Apprentice Electrician
An Inside Apprentice Wireman at IBEW Local 231 is a trainee electrician working under experienced journeymen to learn the trade through a structured apprenticeship. They assist with installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. The role combines paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction, focusing on safety, electrical theory, and code compliance, with the goal of becoming a licensed journeyman wireman.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in installing electrical wiring, conduit, panels, and equipment
- Measure, cut, bend, and run conduit (EMT, rigid, etc.)
- Pull wire and cable through raceways
- Help install lighting, outlets, switches, and control systems
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and electrical drawings
- Use and maintain electrical tools and testing equipment
- Follow the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local regulations
- Maintain a clean and safe job site
- Adhere strictly to OSHA and jobsite safety standards
- Support troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems
Training & Education
- Participate in a formal apprenticeship program (typically 4 years)
- Attend classroom instruction covering electrical theory, code, safety, and math
- Complete required on-the-job training hours
- Progress through wage increases as skills and hours accumulate

Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Basic math and mechanical aptitude
- Ability to work in physically demanding environments (lifting, climbing, standing)
- Strong work ethic and willingness to learn
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
- Valid driver’s license
