Through a partnership between the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 231 and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), the JATC provides industry-leading education and training for electrical apprentices and journeymen.

Apprentice Electrician

An Inside Apprentice Wireman at IBEW Local 231 is a trainee electrician working under experienced journeymen to learn the trade through a structured apprenticeship. They assist with installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. The role combines paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction, focusing on safety, electrical theory, and code compliance, with the goal of becoming a licensed journeyman wireman.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in installing electrical wiring, conduit, panels, and equipment
  • Measure, cut, bend, and run conduit (EMT, rigid, etc.)
  • Pull wire and cable through raceways
  • Help install lighting, outlets, switches, and control systems
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and electrical drawings
  • Use and maintain electrical tools and testing equipment
  • Follow the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local regulations
  • Maintain a clean and safe job site
  • Adhere strictly to OSHA and jobsite safety standards
  • Support troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems

Training & Education

  • Participate in a formal apprenticeship program (typically 4 years)
  • Attend classroom instruction covering electrical theory, code, safety, and math
  • Complete required on-the-job training hours
  • Progress through wage increases as skills and hours accumulate 

Requirements

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Basic math and mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to work in physically demanding environments (lifting, climbing, standing)
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
  • Valid driver’s license
