2026 Operating Engineer Apprentice Applications

We are one of two hoisting and portable locals in the State of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and the only hoisting and portable union in the state of Vermont.

Our members cover a variety of jobs classifications in industries such as highway and building construction, mining, and utility work such as water and sewer excavation.

In most cases, if you can push, pull, pump, or lift material, rolls on tires or crawls on tracks like a tank, it falls under the jurisdiction of the IUOE. Operating Engineers take pride in the fact that virtually all construction projects; they are the first workers on the job, and the last off.

Although each member has a favorite type of machinery to operate, Operating Engineers are masters of a variety of equipment. This versatility keeps them employable, since employers' needs vary from project to project.

Heavy Equipment mechanics are also very important contributors on any construction job, requiring a thorough knowledge of many types of equipment. Skilled mechanics are critical because if the equipment isn't running when needed, an entire project can come to a screeching halt.

Once all of the applications are in, we will then schedule a testing session for each of the applicants. The test is a standardized test consisting of Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, and Skills Aptitude sections. This is a general knowledge assessment test.

After the testing phase of the process is completed, we will ask the applicants to come back one more time to interview with the trustees. This is your chance to really tell them why you should be chosen for this program.

The entire process takes about a few months and the economy does influence how many individuals we can take in at each program opening.
